The Advisory Council exists to provide a partnership
between the architecture profession and the School of
Architecture. The council engages alumni with students
and faculty while assisting with fundraising and the
creation of endowment funds.
The Advisory Council is currently made up of around
30 40 architects from around the nation with
an excitement and passion for the MSU School of Architecture.
The Advisory Council is made up of both alumni as well
as friends of the school or architecture, all being
associated with respectable firms across the country
and into Canada.
On April 17th 1998, the first Advisory Council (AC)
meeting was held at MSUs School of Architecture
(SoA) and included six alumni- Wayne Berg, Warren Dean,
Bill Hoy, Larry Hurlbert, Jerrily Kress, and Keith Rupert-
invited by the Director of the SoA, Clark Llewellyn.
Since that first meeting the SoA has hosted over 18
AC meetings and built a membership of over 60 architects
and professionals. The AC has moved forward to establish
a Business Council and a Graduate Council comprising
an addition 27 members.
Prior to 1998 a majority of the alumni had forgotten
or not been given the opportunity to renew their ties
with the SoA. We did not have a clue about the issues
affecting the school until Clark asked us to return
to the SoA in an advisory capacity. Over the years the
AC has established communication between the profession
and academia on topics of curriculum, design and innovation,
and trends. We have participated in fundraising, lectures,
competitions, design studios, and foreign travel. With
the help of the MSU foundation the AC established the
Endowment for Excellence, successfully raising $250,000
to date with the goal of $500,000. The endowment will
sustain the SoA into the future. WE act as a conduit
and cheerleaders for our school within our
profession across the nation. We are proud of the numerous
awards the students, faculty and staff have received,
the quality of the graduates and the continuous innovation
that the school has demonstrated. We all owe Clark our
thanks for initiating the AC almost a decade ago. He
has done a masterful job of informing and involving
SoA alumni.
In the spirit of furthering communications and celebrating
the great successes of the AC, I have begun sending
out emails to the membership regarding the current happenings
at the School every few weeks. I believe that open communication
to interested alumni will be critical during the transition
from Clarks leadership to the next director. For
anyone interested in seeing the updates, they will be
posted on the web at http://www.arch.montana.edu/supportsoa/Presidentupdates/index.htm
Everyone of has an individual story of why we attended
MSU and unique memories: the unbelievable studio time,
the lifelong friendships and all-nighters, Almiras
colored stockings (spelling tests and cigarette images)
and others too long to list. We need to take pride in
the fact that we all graduated from MSU and be thankful
we have had Clark providing the passion, gaining support
needed to create the AC and reaching out to alumni across
the nation these past 14 years. Join us as we begin
the next leg of the journey that began over 75 years
ago!

The Graduate Council provides students with 'real
life' training. These presentations and meetings help
answer some of the most often asked questions about
life after architecture school. Presentations address
work schedule, firm differences, salary, licensure,
expectations, and opportunity for growth in various
design related fields
